There is no doubt that whenever you use any mapping application on the iPhone or iPad (Mini) Cellular, there will be significant strain on the battery life of the device. This is because the GPS chip is constantly sending and receiving signals in order to provide you with moment by moment location updates.
One of the tremendous advantages of using the turn-by-turn directions on the built in Apple Maps app is the way it is integrated into the operating system. This gives the Maps App a significant advantage over other mapping apps like Google Maps. Some of these advantages include the ability to use Siri to get directions and the ability to lock your device and have the Maps app work in the background. This is how you can save battery life on your iOS device while using the Maps app.
All you need to do is search for an address in the Maps app using Siri or by manually typing it in. Tap on the banner that appears above the address. Then, tap on the little “Car” symbol beneath to the location name. This will take you into driving directions mode. After you have begin using the turn-by-turn directions, you can turn off your device’s screen by pushing the On/Off button on the side or top of the device. Now, you save battery by not having the screen on and whenever your next turn is coming up, the screen will automatically turn on providing you with your next turn. After you have made the turn, the screen will turn back off once again saving battery life. This gives you the maximum battery life while using the GPS for driving directions.
