The question of how to care for the battery in your iPhone, iPad (Mini), and iPod Touch is an important one. With the investment you have put into your iDevice, you want to make sure you get the longevity out of the investment you have made. All iOS devices carry lithium-based batteries. These batteries give the longest life for the weight and size which is why they are used in many electronics. They also allow for several hundred charges (400 at 80% capacity is what Apple says) before they begin to lose capacity. Lithium-based batteries, like the ones used in the iPhone, iPad (Mini), and iPod Touch don’t have “memory effect” meaning you can charge and discharge the batteries at any level. You don’t have to discharge the batteries completely each time before charging it again. Overall, these are excellent batteries for use in iDevices.
Despite the batteries being very low maintenance, there are a few things you can do to help care for the battery in your iPhone, iPad (Mini), and iPod Touch:
1. Do a full recharge and discharge once per month
This helps keep your battery in the best condition possible as you use your device. The full charge, discharge, and then recharge ensures that all the electrons in the battery are set into motion at least once per month.
2. Make sure your device doesn’t get too hot or too cold
Keeping your iPhone, iPad (Mini), and iPod Touch at room temperature (72°F or 22°C) is ideal for battery life and care. However, your battery will function well in temperatures ranging between 32°F (0°C) and 95°F (35°C). If you leave your iDevice in direct sunlight, the battery will drain much faster. There are some protective cases that don’t let your iDevice breathe causing the device to heat up while charging. If this happens, be sure to take the device out of the case when you charge it to best care for the battery and get the strongest charge possible.
Following these tips will help you keep your iPhone, iPad (Mini), and iPod Touch’s battery in optimum condition.
