Did you know that you can adjust the volume for the turn-by-turn directions on the maps app in iOS 6? The volume comes set at Normal Volume by default but the Normal Volume level is often too loud depending on the surrounding noise.
If you need to change the volume for the Maps App you can do this in the Maps section of the Settings App. Launch Settings and scroll down to Maps. Tapping on the Maps Settings reveals various options including volume adjustment, kilometers/miles, as well as font size options for the labels on the map. To adjust the volume, simply select one of the 4 options available: No Voice, Low Volume, Normal Volume, and Loud Volume. Changing the volume for the turn-by-turn directions in the Maps App will not affect the volume settings for the rest of your device (Siri, Music, and System Volume). If you need to turn down or turn up the volume for anything other than the Maps App, check out this post: How to set volume for music, ringer, alarm, and Siri – iPhone, iPad (Mini), iPod Touch.
Thankfully, the upcoming iOS 7 that will be released this Fall includes the volume setting at the bottom right of the turn-by-turn navigation window. You will no longer need to adjust the volume for the Maps App in the Settings App. This will make it much easier to change the volume on the go. You can still change the volume for Maps in the Settings App in iOS 7 which will tell the app what volume setting to launch with by default. One other helpful setting feature for the Maps App in iOS 7 is that you can select whether to have Driving or Walking directions be your Preferred Directions. If you select Walking Directions, then every time you get directions the Maps App will display walking directions by default. The same is true for the Driving Directions. Overall, there are some great improvements to the Maps App in iOS 7.
