A 16GB iPhone 4S in good condition is currently selling for $160 (Sprint & Verizon) and $200 (AT&T, T-Mobile, or unlocked).
Those prices should be, in nearly every case, more than enough to offset the down payment on a shiny new iPhone 5S or 5C.
