Over the years, Apple has continued to refine and perfect the whole line of iOS devices: iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad (Mini, Air). Each year, the devices get thinner, better battery life, and better camera capabilities. On September 9, Apple is poised to announce another iteration of the iPhone. This could be the biggest and most dramatic change to the iPhone since it was introduced. My prediction is that this year, Apple will drop the number that goes along with each iPhone (4, 4S, 5, 5c, 5s) and just call the new iPhone, the iPhone Air just like it did with the most recent iPad.

One of the biggest reasons I think the new iPhone 6 will be called the iPhone Air is that the form factor is changing. There are dozens of rumors circulating that the next iPhone will sport a 4.7″ screen and a 5.5″ screen. This is a significant size increase from the current 4″ screen on the iPhone 5s. With this added screen real estate, comes the ability for Apple to fit more components in a thinner profile. They will be able to spread out the iPhone’s internal parts to make the next iPhone the thinnest iPhone that has ever been made. Because of this, the name iPhone Air would be a really appropriate name for the next generation iPhone.

Additional rumors for the iPhone Air (6) include the potential of a sapphire glass display, improved Touch ID sensors, better camera, increased battery life, and a higher resolution screen. Here’s to hoping that all these things are included in the next generation iPhone when it gets announced on September 9. Shortly after the iPhone Air is announced, iOS 8 will also be released bringing a whole host of new features to the operating system.
