OneReceipt (track receipts) for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (mini)

IMG_0311Receipts… fewer words strike fear into the hearts of the average person trying to keep on top of their finances. Today I’ll be reviewing OneReceipt for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (mini) which is an app that finally helps you wrangle the endless amounts of paper receipts that seem to spew out at us from every store we find ourselves swiping our credit or debit cards at. Long gone are the days of check registers (for most of us that is!) which now leaves many of us with the daunting task of how to keep a tight reign on where we stand on a daily basis with our finances. “But I just login to my online banking account and check” you say. Ah, yes, but what about the companies that don’t process your purchases for a full week (i.e. gas stations)? What about your spouse that is making purchases, or credit cards vs debit cards? Again, this is where OneReceipt does it’s magic… here’s how it works.

You’re at the store and just made your purchase… simply pull out your phone and snap a picture of your receipt. OneReceipt allows you to categories and tag your receipt for easy filing and retrieval. While this alone was enough to convince me, OneReceipt takes it two steps further. You can allow OneReceipt to access your email (Gmail and Yahoo only) and it will automatically pull in all digital receipts (i.e. Amazon, Ebay, etc.). Need more convincing? OneReceipt can also let you see your receipts in your credit card or bank statements.

Some of the other key features of OneReceipt include:

  • Automatically retrieves email receipts from your inbox
  • Receipts stored in the cloud for easy access
  • Personal @OneReceipt email address for forwarding email receipts (especially helpful for the non-Gmail/Yahoo email users)
  • Monthly spending summary
  • Return alerts, acts like a personal assistant
  • Shipping status to help track your packages
  • Categories and tags to organize your receipts
  • Manually enter a receipt

While this app can help you get your personal finances in order as you work towards keeping better track of where your money goes, it may also be helpful for you should you have to track spending at work. Have employees that forget receipts when submitting there request for expenditures? Or maybe your an assistant that has to do your bosses credit card statement spending hours sifting through crumpled receipts and hounding him/her for lost ones – OneReceipt just might help make your life a little bit easier.

Here’s a couple things that OneReceipt does not do:

  • It won’t share your email address
  • It doesn’t have to stay on… you can always turn it off.
  • It doesn’t take security lightly – utilizes a secure SSL connection at all times
  • It doesn’t store or keep credit card information

Added Bonus (more recently): OneReceipt has more recently included an extension for those of you that utilize the google chrome browser. This plugin helps to provide automatic receipt matching as you login to popular user sits such as Mint.com, American Express, Bank of America, or CitiCards.

There are a lot of receipt keeping apps out there, but for the price, OneReceipt seems to be the best bang for your buck (Free!). Have you found a receipt program that you utilize? Have you used OneReceipt? We’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.
