How to quickly create calendar appointments or call someone when a date or phone number appears in text form in iOS 6

Shortcut to call phone number in iOS 6Built in to the basic features of your iPhone, iPad (Mini), or iPod Touch is the ability to quickly create new appointments or make a call when a date or phone number appears in text form on your device. This is true for emails, text messages, webpages, and many other places where text appears on your iOS device. You will know when you can use this feature if the date and/or the phone number is a different color from the rest of the text.

Shortcut to add calendar appointment in iOS 6Whenever you see this, all you need to do is to tap on the date or phone number and a dialogue box will appear giving you options to create a new appointment (if you tapped on a date) or call the number (if you tapped on a phone number). If a time is listed in the text as well as the date, then, tapping on the date will create a new appointment automatically setting the start time to what is listed. If you tap on a date in an email message and create a new calendar event, the calendar app automatically pulls in the title of the email and makes it the title of your calendar event. You can still edit this if you need to.

When tapping on a phone number, you are given the option to “Call” or “Cancel.” Shortcut to call phone number in iOS 6Tapping call will initiate a call. However, if you want more options, just tap and hold on the phone number in the text. This will bring up these additional options: “Call” “Text Message” “Add to Contacts” “Copy” and “Cancel.” If you tap on “Add to Contacts” you will get additional options to either “Create New Contact” or to “Add to Existing Contact.”

In addition to this, if a website appears in an email or a text message, you can tap on it to be taken directly to that webpage. Tapping and holding on the web address will give you these additional options: “Open” “Add to Reading List” “Copy” and “Cancel.”
